I completely agree! This is my first season competing in the indoor and in my second event i went too fast and lost my way. I then decided at the next event I would take it easy in the obs, I got round safely and in quite a good time but as I came out a complete stranger said 'You need to get a bl**dy decent whip on that pony' I don't, even when I do go fast I rarely use my whip other than for guidance, my pony listens and i'm sure many other ponies would to.

ALL COMPETITORS PLEASE NOTE:
The whip can be used as an AID in the same way as a rider uses the leg aids BUT if it used as a weapon to inflict pain or is used excessively THEN THE COMPETITOR WILL BE PENALIZED OR ELIMINATED FROM THE COMPETITION.
** Over use of the whip will not be tollerated. **
If you think a whip is being used excessively then tell the event secretary or TD who will address the matter. If it happens at another event then email or Ring Dick Carey or the IHDT Office and we will speak to those concerned.

I competed at Stags End on Sunday (28th) and it wa a great event. Brilliant obstacles and the stewards are always friendly. The only thing that marred the day was two particular drivers. One lass (Came fifth in Open Pony) charges into an obstacle like her life depended on it.

She literately charged her horse into the first obstacle straight into the barrier as she had lost control and was going far too fast. I noticed though that she drives this way at every event. She is so competitve that she doesn't even realise that she would do better going at a slower but rhythmic pace.
Once she made that mistake she seemed to give up and then completely lost her way around the remaining course. I know some poeple do go out to win but they should also drive for the fun of it. There's always another event but not another horse.

Then another lass came in with a lovely black horse and though she drove much nicer than the former, she never stopped hitting her horse with the whip, even when she had finished and was walking out in a straight line she still used her whip. I wanted to shout out "Stop bl**dy hitting your horse" but of course I didn't. As she was going round trhe obstacles the horse shook it's head everytime the whip was used. The thing is how is a horse meant to learn the aids from the whip if it is constantly being used.

But that was it, everyone else made it a great event to compete in and watch.

I just love driving...
