I'm longing to know what your book is called, Peter?

p.s. This agrees with Sallie Walrond's advice (on the coaching salute) although she adds that the lady whip should tilt her elbow upwards as the whip is raised to the horizontal - also, if a Whip is addressed by Royalty, a seated liveried groom should remove his hat and place it on his knees... Useful stuff!

According to the booklet and bible of driving etiquette," the correct salute for gentlemen upon seeing acquaintances, other drivers, or important persons they can either place their whips in their left hand and with their right hand raise their hat or they can lift their right arms to hold their whip in front of their faces. ( the picture in the book shows a gentleman holding his whip very carefully across his face below his nose and on his moustache so as not to block his vision) The third salute used mainly by coachmen is to place the whip in front of their faces in an upright or vertical position- but since this could be confused with the 'stop' signal by those following behind the first two methods are most generally used." When I took my driving exams the examiner explained this to me in no uncertain terms when I mistakenly saluted like a 'lady'. The book (bible)also states "that lady drivers should raise their whips horizontally, while bowing their heads so that their foreheads almost touch the hand grips and the back of their hands."

Scull Caps without peaks look like something the Victorians put under their beds!!

If gentleman do not have peaks on their hats then perhaps a well defined bow of the head would be good. Dressage riders bow their heads and drop their right hand down their side, this could be adapted by dropping the hand down the out side of the seat and would look very grand. I could see the mime of the cap peak salute may well turn into some other, perhaps not so polite, salute................

Anyone else got any bright ideas for the gentlemans salute?

Useful advice, thanks Rita.....but, some skull safety hats don't have peaks, are we to mime the peak touching? This reads as an almost sarcastic question, but it isn't, I promise!! I think the salute for ladies is straight forward enough, but a bit more clarity for us gents would be welcome.....anything to impress the judges is good policy by me! Dean

The salute given by so many drivers has been incorrect for so long, at last someone is asking for the correct salute for driving, Yipeee.
Perhaps we should award bonus marks for it.............

According to Sally Waldron
Ladies = "A small bow" (towards the judges) "at the same time raise your whip (which is in your right hand)to a horizontal position so that the elbow is tipped up". This means the whip should be across your face at eye level.
Gentlemen - "take the whip and reins in your left hand and raise your hat"
I think for our purposes a gentleman should put his reins in his left hand and touch the peak of his hat with his right hand.
Junior could do the same according to gender.

How very nice it will be to see something like the correct driving salute instead of arm and whip being thrust high into the air as a child would in the classroom!

Hope this helps Fiona.

Before we start the season, could we clarify what, exactly, a correct salute is - for gentlemen, ladies and juniors...?

Advice wanted, please!
