I am trying to write a short but pithy (hmmmm) article for Drive Time magazine on the subject of shetlands as competition ponies (and briefly on their successes in the show ring too). I think more recently this is thanks to IHDT for providing a means for us SP drivers to compete without an arduous marathathon, and without a backstepper, but to still be able to enjoy the key aspects of the event and to be able to experience the Small Pony classes at the final - how else would we be able to compete at this level otherwise? Also likewise the local club events and Indoor Outs that allow a similar set-up, and the format of the Club Driver Challenge may also enable shetties to compete, where their speed and turning capabilities stand them in good stead! Its a chance to promote the sport at a grass roots level for people who may not have considered it as they think their pony wouldn't be capable, and don't know what they are missing out on! Being fairly new to the sport, I am trying to research it as much as possible as I do not know a huge amount about notable shetties in the history of driving trials! Does anyone have any anecdotes or notable achievements with small ponies that they would like mentioned? Any photographs of said ponies? Any contributions gratefully received! Please either post here or email me at PippaLuE@@@gmail.com
