hi, one of the best turnouts I've seen compete this season in the NW has been a single shetland who was nippy and quick through the cones and yet did a lovely dressage test. Size doesn't matter so long as its fun (human & equine).

Reply to Tingly: if you are going to ride it, I think you should get a horse or pony of the size you feel comfortable riding! I'm 5' 4" and heavier than you and I ride and hunt a 14:1 lightweight cob. I've never worn him out yet and (so far) have only fallen off once - not so far to the ground - and I can reach gates to open them when people on bigger horses can't. He happily takes me and my 13.5 stone husband and Fenix four-wheeler round 20 kms+ marathons. Also, if you are driving, you need to consider lugging equipment about if you don't have anyone to help you all the time. A pony carriage is smaller and lighter than a horse carriage, as is the harness - and so on. But pony classes tend to have more entries than horse classes so you might prefer a small horse... Hope this helps you!

My BHDTA rule book has temporarily hidden itself, but, as I understand it, BHDTA rules are based on FEI rules, which state, on the subject of pony height - "...its height at the withers, having been measured on a smooth, level surface, does not exceed 148 cms (without shoes), 149 cms (with shoes)." That's about 14 hands, 2 and a quarter inches and 14 hands 2 and five-eighths of an inch on my tape measure!

You can see the latest FEI rules on the BHDTA website, www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk, and on www.horsesport.org

The new BHDTA rull book is due out at the start of February.

Don't worry unless you win frequently: that's when people start to take an interest in your pony's height!

Hi Liz
Size, down to centimeters now!! 148 denotes a pony, above is a horse! If like me this does not mean anything, on the BHDTA website there is a conversion table, which states 14.2hh = 58inches = 147.5cm. So 14.2 is a pony, anything 14.2 and a quarter of an inche is a horse.
Normally equines are measured without shoes, if shod upon measurment deduct one half inche from overall height ( which is one centimetres - give or take a few millimetres!)
Conversion formula is also on BHDTA site as follows.
inches x 2.54 = centimetres
centimtres x 0.39 = inches.
Now that is as clear as mud.

Please clarify for me. My 14h2 cob, does he compete as a horse or a pony? Please do not refer me to the rules because I cannot find this on the web site.
Many thanks

Hopefully I will start indoor driving this year. However, please could somebody clarify a couple of the rules. Firstly, what is the delineation between horse and pony. I drive a 14h2 cob. Secondly, if he qualifies as a pony, can I enter in a 125cm carriage (which is the correct size under FEI and BHDTA rules) without a two inch disadvantage against the older 120cm vehicles.

Thanks

Chris

The Indoor Team welcome all new competitors to the Indoor season, Indoor caters for all regardless if they use an old or new carriage. Therefore, for this season, we are keeping to the old vehicle widths.
The Indoor rules are based on the BHDTA rules, which are kept to unless otherwise specified within the Indoor Rules, so if your animal is a pony or a horse under the BHDTA measuements then that is what it is for all Indoor competitions.
