Fantastic thanks so much rosemary. He is 12h welsh section a. I broke him to drive approx 5 months ago and is coming on so well he is a real natural. I wanted to watch the trials as it is something I've always wanted to do and I think it would really suit my pony :-)
Do you have the number of the people in kensworth its only up the road from me so that would be perfect :-)

Thanks so much for your help
Sam

Hi Sam,
Give me a call on 07977 226330 and I'll do what I can to help. If you come to watch the indoor event at Shuttleworth come over and introduce yourself. As far as I know there aren't any carriage builders in the Herts area but I do know of other craftsmen (eg coach/lorry builder in Kensworth Beds) who would be able to do some work on the carriage for you. How big is your pony and how experienced is he/she?

Hi, Sam, thanks!

I suggest you speak to Rosemary Neale, the organiser, as she is very helpful and, I'm sure, has some useful local contacts re. swingle tree and any other changes.

There are all sorts of carriages in people's barns, unused, so let people know what you are looking for and you could get lucky, in time... or find a second-hand one for sale. Also have a look on the forum here, on the BHDTA site and visit the club websites. Beware of "small pony pairs/single" carriages, however, as these four-wheelers are nearly always far too heavy for a single pony.

The training for trials scheme has only the two sessions at Sparsholt and Ashfields organised this year as there is special funding for it which runs out after December. I'm sure there is a trainer near you, however - worth a session for extra tips, perhaps.

Best of luck!
Fiona

Hi Fiona

Thank you very much for the reply and advice :-) I am in the Hertfordshire area so was going to pop along to the Shuttleworth college indoor event this month.
Do you know anywhere local to Hertfordshire that would be able to fit a swingle tree to my cart? I also need some adjustments made, as the breeching loop is slightly to far back down the shafts so needs moving up a little.
I did originally only buy the exercise cart for breaking him in, but having now seen the price of the indoor trials / pleasure carts I think I need a little longer to save hehe. Is there anywhere that would sell them type of carts cheaper?
I think I will definatley need my groom to read out the dressage test. I printed it off last week and gave it a go in the School and well lets just say my memory isnt what it used to be haha. But as they say practise makes perfect :-)
The training in Essex sounds good, do they do this all year round?

Many thanks
Sam

Hello Sam, welcome! I don't know where you are or if you've already seen an indoor event in all it's glory, so I suggest, before you enter one, go along to watch. You can meet other drivers and ask lots of questions, speak to your local organiser, too. Your area may run newcomers training or have a helpful buddying scheme. Many areas have a club class specifically designed for beginners - these may be run under differentish rules - we allow club class grooms to read out the dressage test, at Wix, for example.
You will need a swingle tree unless you are using a full collar. This should not be expensive or difficult to have done by a competent local carriage builder.
Cones is driven at 220m/minute, usually a brisk trot or for smaller ponies, a canter. I'd recommend you take things gently at first so that you and your pony get the hang of things!
If you and your pony have not done driving trials before you must be assessed, and your local organiser will help you to get this done before your first event. If your pony has not been around other turnouts before, I recommend you take him out with other carriages, too, as some ponies can get frightened, especially seeing pairs or teams for the first time. And take him to a smaller event first, if you can, to get him used to it. Btw, he must be at least four years old and vaccinated.
Your carriage track width should be 125cms (outside of one wheel track on the ground to the opposite side) but ask your local organiser...
I hope this doesn't all seem too much! I'm sure that you'll get lots more helpful advice and that you'll soon get going and have loads of fun. Do read the rules on this site and please ask again if anything needs clarifying.
P.s. Why not come to the Training for trials at Ashfields in Essex, 26 & 27 November? It's intended to get you into the sport and it's only £25. More details on www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk
Hope we'll see you on the circuit!
Fiona

Hi All

I am new to this site, and am very interested in starting to do indoor trials with my little welsh sec A.
I just have a few questions which I am hoping someone will be able to help with, so here goes..

My pony is currently driven in an exercise cart will I be allowed to do indoor driving with this? Also the cart is not currently fitted with a swingletree will this be allowed?

My second question is are the cones and obstacles done in a trot or canter.

and for the final question, is there a beginners class that I could enter when I begin the indoor trials?

Any other information / advice about the wonderful world of indoor driving would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks
Sam
