The Points League best score in each class, in each area, plus invitations to Juniors and Veteran ALL qualify for the British Indoor Championships.

If every class in every area produced a qualifier that would mean an entry of 320 competitors. Thankfully this is unlikely every to happen. If we continue the way we have for the past 13 years we do not have a problem regarding actual entries for the Championships. Around 130 competitors have come to Keysoe for the Chamionship for the last three years. THIS IS A MANAGABLE NUMBER, it is only if this number increases that will cause problem.

Area semi's: we tried these when 'Indoors' was just an infant. The outcome was not always true to form as it only takes a good competitor to have a bad day at the semi and they miss out on the Champs. Semi's also need to be organised, venue, date, judges, stewards, plus it is yet another day for some stewards to arrange a day off work and give up their valuable winter day light time.

Please remember that 'Indoors' is organsies and events run by volunteers.

What we are talking about is the BRITISH IHDT Championships, which should only be contested by the very best the 'Indoor' sport has within its ranks. Do we really want the only competitor in the class with a regular score of 250+ to qualify? Just think what a shock it would be to such an competitor to be confronted with competitors that regulary get a score of 150 or less, how demoralising would that be? This is not the aim of 'Indoors' we need to support and encourage competitors of all abilities.

Want to qualify for the Champs at Keysoe? It is entirely up to you, choose an area where there is competition within the class, stick to that area and see your points mount up. Have fun, go to other areas for practice, they need your support but only try to qualify in one area as that is all you are allowed to qualify from.

Go for it - do your best without stessing your horse/pony (remember to keep him warm between phases of the competition and cool off properly and suitably rugged before heading var/www, your horses welfare must take priority for without him you will not qualify at all) and enjoy this winter season of Indoor Driving and hopefully we will see you at the British IHDT Championship sponsored by CARRIAGEHOUSE INSURANCE for the seventh year.

Its ok if everyboby drives the same obstacle, the only problem is all the distances have to be spot on and angles the same as a slight differance can add or loose a second. Would running finals over two weekends work ?? as I know several people if they qualified cant get time off workMik

I understand where Ginny is coming from but the problem in remote areas is the distance that has to be covered to attend an event. Today we attended an event in Aberdeen this was attended by folk from Moray in the north (us) and as far south as fife beside Edinburgh covering a radius of about 130 miles our largest class had 5 competitors in it. Yes we don't necessarily get a wide range of competitors but the commitment from each is impressive. Our next nearest event apart from Aberdeen is Carlisle a 6 hour drive. But if it meant that I could come to Keysoe then I would consider it.

Would qualification with a score of not worse than 140% of the best in the class only work if all the areas drove the same obstacle courses,(as the longer the obstacle the more penalties accumulated) That would be an advantage to those lucky people able to drive in more than one area.

I think perhaps that the biggest problem is in areas where there is only one competitor in a class, in that case it seems entry in class equals automatic entry to finals, Regional qualifiers would at least give some competion to sort out the best.

However, I feel that the sport is growing and although it means more work, every qualifier should have the chance to drive at the finals.

The suggestion for 'regional semi finals' below...
Would that mean people would have to qualify additionally through those before they could go to Keysoe? We thought that may be asking too much of drivers and organisers, to fit in an extra round of qualification with its cost and time before Keysoe and before the start of the outdoor season? Or not?

On the other hand extra regional events so a wider number of people could take part, not as a qualification hurdle but partly as an alternative, could work? Would people want to go both to those and to Keysoe?

Regional semi finals are fine, but when you live right up on the Moray firth as we do, then regional Semis would mean another trip to England to qualify. I reckon that if I manage to qualify and come to the finals then this is going to cost the best part of £1000.

Good idea Martin! We should not be stifling the eligible competitors just because the numbers can't be handled....is that tail beginning to wag the dog here??

Too many turnouts fot the Finals? Why not insert regional Semi Finals in March perhaps almagamating three four or five areas into one.
More competitors could get a chance of going to Keysoe without reducing classes or adding artificial hurdles. It also might allow the 2nd 3rd or even 4th places in the classes a second bite at the cherry.

Reply to reactions........... The indoor horse trials is amazing and surly by putting any restriction stops the sport from growing.... Which is the way forward. I know more entries means more work but we have to grow with it. Think the qualification needs a giggle but will need many minds on the job.... Indoors/ ODE is growing and suits many equines and drivers ...... Only my thoughts mike xx

Thanks Mike, I think that the extra qualification hurdle might work but should it count in the juniors.

Briefly, you qualify for the Ihdt championships by winning the Ihdt points league for your class for your region.

You get points league points for each event in which you're placed, by place, and can see the points leagues through the season on the Results page.
You discard one - e.g. if your region has six events, count your best 5 there.

There's full detail in the Ihdt rules, section 10, here.

With the ever increasing number of regions and the difficulty of getting any more people into and through a championships, it's been suggested we may also need an extra qualification hurdle as in the outdoor (e.g. a score not worse than 140% of the best in the event allowing for class diffs ...) but that's not simple, certainly not decided, might never happen ... reactions?
