I go indoors with my 11hh shetland x. He pulls a bennington mini 4 wheeler with driver and groom and his handicap is not lack of horse power, its his novice driver. There are small pony drivers out there not just having lots of fun but getting placed as well.

Just an interesting point regarding small ponies. The 2004 Pair National Champions were Barry Marshalls Mighty Mice, both VERY SMALL Shetlands! Barry also drives them Tandem, and still wins.

sorry to hear you folks are having a hard time up against the bigger ponies but I have to disagree with you.I drive a 39inch shetland to a hartland microsport she pulls two people no problem this is are third season indoors and love it shes gives it 110% every time we are nearly always in the rossettes and at our first competion this season we where fastest in the cones and first set of obstacles and won novice pony!!!I am now training up a pair of 34inch minis and can't wait to get them indoors later this season I know I can't go as fast as the big ones in mutiples and don't stand a chance of winning but I don't care I am doing it for the fun and freindship between all our fellow driver's in East Anglia So all you folks driving pocket rockets ( little ponies) don't be put off come and have a go you will get hooked on it and need a regular fix just like me I have never enjoyed the winter so much!!!!

Oh dear poor Sophie. My son had the same problems. He likes driving shetlands. Unfortunately, we have decided not to compete anymore indoor with shetlands as they just cannot compete against the bigger ponies. At the championships last year our ponies galloped as fast as they could, but we still ended up last. Ours are not the really big shetlands, they are the 9hh jobbies. Have not found a pairs carriage that is light enough for them to pull (plus driver and groom) on the indoor surfaces. Maybe there should be a class for smaller ponies and all us small pony lovers would come in our droves. We thought that we had found competitions suitable for our shetlands but alas it has proved not to be.

IT WAS GREAT TO SEE SOPHIE THE DONKEY AT SPARSHOLT ON SUNDAY .I AND MY FRIEND WENT TO SPECTATE AND GIVE MORAL SUPPORT WITH A VIEW TO MAYBE COMPETE WITH OUR DONKS.HOWEVER IT WAS DISAPIONTING TO FIND OUT THAT GROOMS HAVE TO BE ONBOARD.DONKEYS DONT HAVE TO PULL 2 BODIES IN THE SHOW RING LET ALONE ON A SOFT SURFACE.ITS OK ON A SMOOTH TARMAC ROAD BUT POOR SOPHIE FOUND IT A REAL DRAG TO GET MOVING .IT WAS ALSO INTERESTING THAT THERE WAS NOTHING UNDER 13HH IN A SINGLE TURNOUT IS THIS DUE TO A LACK OF HORSE POWER ALSO.IF ENOUGH DONKS ENTER COULD WE HAVE OUR OWN SECTION WITH DRIVER ONLY ON BOARD,WERE NOT WORRIED ABOUT QUALIFING ,JUST MAKE OUR DONKS WINTER A BIT LESS BORING
