i have been reading all about the questions for those with small ponys, well i drive a 12.2 welsh pony belonging to dick carey,to one of his carriages, he does one day events at club level and the 2 day events at normanhurst at club level,he also competes indoors all season and has had a win in the open pony class, in my opion the lighter the carriage for a small pony the better but if the pony is happy pullin the carriage its in aslong as the people on it are fairly middle weight then there shouldnt be a problem! after all the horse/pony will let you know if anything is wrong!

having seen his team and his son's team at Catton in the World championships, they are the eight biggest shetlands I have ever seen, on a par with my Welsh section A's. I have a 12.2 section C who happily manages two adults and a carriage on the flat.

Thank you Alan!

So 120 kg for the people, 130 kg for vehicle and harness... 250 kg. Hmmm.

Should one also consider the length of leg? Is a leaner and lighter but taller pony, better than a heavier but shorter-legged animal?

Apologies for going into a "theoretical" situation here, but I find it amazing how people like Aart Van Der Kamp and complete at the highest level with a team of shetlands.

OK, add up the weight of the driver, groom, vehicle and harness. That total should be less that the fit weight of the pony. Assuming you don't want a mini-carthorse type, in your case this would probably equal a 12.2 to 13.0 pony depending on its shape and type.

Let's assume two adults, 5'5" and about nine or ten stone each.

Chris, it all depends on the size/weight of the adults.

I have a further question: What's the smallest size of pony two adults could realisticly compete with at outdoor level?

We have a 9.3 shetland and put her to a Hartland Microsport .It is a single seat with back step and bum rests in the corners it only weights approx 115kgs with brakes. She flys in it and finds it easy peasy to pull round indoors come and have a look at it next time you are at Orwell or Wix you are welcome to have a look round it

I have a 12.2 welsh pony, this is our second season competing indoors we've moved on from a two wheeler with no back step to a four wheeler Bennington Mini Deluxe. This vehicle is excellant for small ponies,it's light weight, moves easily and has improved our pony's enthusiam, we love it!

I've been enjoying myself for the last few seasons with an 11.3 pony and a 2 wheeled carriage with no backstep. But I figure it's about time I looked for a 4 wheeler and I just wondered what does everyone else use with small ponies.
