Indoor rules:
2.4.3 Organisers may accept younger drivers subject strictly to rules for young drivers,
including being covered by independent liab ility insurance [not covered by IHDT
UK].
Annex 18 BYD rules (found at the back of the 2011 BHDTA rules) See sections 3, 4 and 6 especially.

We have an 8 year old, Joshua Twitchen, competing indoors in East Anglia and Cerys Gilbert (now 9) doing well at West Norfolk and Shuttleworth. Grace Smith started driving indoors when she was 8 (I believe). They are all covered by their own insurance, as I understand it, as well as being a member of the IHDTC, of course. They drive very experienced ponies.
There's an extra junior class at the Indoor Finals and has been for a number of years...
If youngsters drive a four-wheeler they must have been assessed to do so by one of their young drivers coaches. (See BYD...?) otherwise they must drive a two-wheeler with a competent adult sitting next to them with a second pair of reins, I understand.
Then you've got to persuade your local organiser that the turnout is safe and get your entry accepted.
Grace drove round Sandringham club event last year, aged 11. We have a small group of good junior drivers in East Anglia - they only cause problems when they tactlessly beat the oldies...

I've also just noticed that the var/www page has a comment under "what people say" from Grace aged 9. I am only asking because I have a friend who has young kids that drive but are being refused entry at our local show because they are not 10. |

The rules state: the driver or groom must be a minimum of 10yrs old on the day of the event. And one of the competitors must be a competent adult aged 18 or over. so how does this compute.
Perhaps the idhdt office can shed some light.

when i read the rules i took it as the groom had to be min age of 10. As he had a competent adult next to him I would of thought it was fine |

I was just reading Carriage Driving Feb issue covering the indoor scene a photo of a young driver aged 9 competeing. I thought the minimum age limit was 10. am I wrong? |
