I was very please to see the horse and hound article highlighting some of our future champs. All exposure for our fab sport is gratefully received as far as I am concerned. I managed to compete at National level at a slightly lower budget than quoted in the article but it was a broad view and it definately isnt cheap if done properly. Good for our young drivers, shame more couldnt be mentioned but I feel sure you will get your chance in the future. Keep at it, and thanks Horse & Hound!!

i totally agree with sonny that publicity for carriage driving is good and makes a change from show-jumping and dressage,it must boost the juniors confidence and give them even more encouragment to carry on national level and maybe encourage more to do so, the whole sport is expensive, unless you have support all the time, without the help of dick carey lending me his pony, carriage, harness and all the help and advice and my mum for coming driving most evenings to get pony fit for club levels, plus my groom i couldnt do it all by myself, one day i plan to do nationals but i think that indoor junior deserve a mention or pic aswel in H&H, all the juniors at indoors have just as much fun as juniors at nationals. when you have a fast pony in an obstical it make it more fun and enjoyable!

Hi all
I think that the exposure in H&H was great, but I tend to agree with Sonny that there are many other junior drivers that need support and only a few were mentioned. I think it would be very difficult to mention ALL but perhaps more investigation by the author of this article would have shown more juniors that would have encourgaged non drivers to start. I feel the article was lacking attention to detail, but we cannot forget any publicity is good publicity.

any publicity for carriage driving as a sport has got to be good and I think we all need to be thankfull to Kerry and all at horse and hound for giving over a whole 3 pages to carriage driving although it would have been nice to see some of the young drivers who struggle to fund themselves and who are bringing on young horses without the back up of wealthy parents or those with parents already involved in driving and not just myself I could name you at least 1 who has been competeing at national level on this sort of footing and wining but on the whole thanks Kerry for this coverage it is much needed and about time that carriage driving got this sort of exposure! well done!

I must be reading a different comic to you John. This is just another example of the way H&H have become lately. The article was good in bits and obviously wrong in some areas, still I suppose it might generate a bit of response in the letters page. Personally I can't be bothered with H&H anymore and just check through it then return it to the newsagents shelf.

First of all, well done Kerry for a great piece - more of this is needed to bring HDT forwards and more people into the sport.

I thought that the article was excellent as it brought driving out of the back pages and had some cracking photos that may well inspire more drivers and help to develop the sport.

It is true that entry fees are prohibitive to many drivers - young and old alike - i think the article was trying to highlight that it is most definately not a sport that can be undertaken lightly and that it does cost a lot of money both to organise and to participate in.

Hopefully those who never even knew that driving was a competetive sport in this format will see what we all rant and rave about, and showing that it's not just for old people opens it up to anyone.

So thankyou very much to H&H for a three page article which i think is very much what the sport of HDT needs!

Cheers

John

I am glad that this feature has started to drum up some interest. It was written as a rallying cry to those who enjoy the sport and want to promote and develop our younger drivers in the hope of them becoming future World Champions. It also gave examples of some of the "unsung heroes" in driving trials who work tirelessly to give junior drivers, with or without their own funding, a good start. If competitors want to aim for the top in any discipline, it's true to say that they will have to pay rather a lot to get there. Funding in driving trials for training, facilities, horses, clinics, camps is needed and this feature, hopefully, highlighted this to potential sponsors and supporters. However, I always welcome readers' comments and am glad you took the time to read the piece.

"...driving is expensive. At Novice level, entry will cost around £135 for example. And a well-produced driving horse can cost £20,000-40,000"

What planet are they are on
