As always I now have more questions than answers. I assume the IHDT rules take precedence over the BHDTA rules. If there is a penalty for driving without a whip does it apply to both national and regional events? If you choose to drive obstacles without carrying a whip do you get:- 5 penalties for the whole phase 10 because you enter the arena twice 20 because you enter 4 obstacles. Thank You | ||

IHDT rules (online) “Entering the arena without a whip or losing or putting down a whip” ... 5 penalties in all phases. So, allowed but punished (presumably). | ||

Please consult the BHDTA Rulebook (www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk) for wording on this rule. The FEI (I think) decided to allow drivers not to carry a whip if they did not wish to do so during the MARATHON, must be carried for dressage and cones. Before disgarding the whip remember it is a driving aid NOT a beating stick and should be used in the same manner as a rider uses leg aids. As Helen says "what if?" Think very hard before you lay down your whip. If you can't hold a whip then put a retainer on it (just a loop from ferral to stock - top to bottom of hand part- and slip your hand through it). To help improve whip management get lessons or teach yourself,to drive in the coachman fashion. This appears to be a dying art as everyone now drives two handed, personally I think dressage should be driven coachman, that would sort out the real drivers. | ||

I read somewhere that a whip had to be carried at all times. But i Can't remember where  Sorry But it makes sense to carry a whip at all time Regardless. | ||

Please could someone help settle an argument (sorry intelligent debate!) that the family has been having since we returned from Keysoe. Having spent a long time mastering the art of driving obstacles holding a whip in hand we were surprised to see a number of able bodied novice competitors driving obstacles without a whip in hand at Keysoe. I maintain that having to hold a whip at all times only applies at regional events, the rules at Keysoe are different. My children disagree with me. Does anyone know what the real rules are please? Thank You. |
