Agree totally with Colin's post. We measured the nose weight of an Ifor 505 fitted with a well known extension. It was in excess of 300 kgs. This is over twice the specified capacity of the coupling head and some serious tow vehicles, such as a Land Rover Discovery 4 or Toyota Land Cruiser. In a normal horse trailer the animals stand astride the axles. This means that they are over the balance point and their weights have little effect on the nose weight. This is by design. By bolting a long heavy extension on the drawbar and then adding a carriage the weight just goes up and up. VOSA are starting to take an interest in horse trailers (and lorries) and generally insurance companies don't like modified products. The Cheval trailer is different in that they have moved the front axle forward to incorporate the the carriage platform weight. ie It was designed for the job.

Just be careful with trailer extensions, each vehicle has a specified nose weight (the weight placed onthe tow ball) usually about 90kg. If you exceed this weight then you will be breaking the law. At the moment Vosa appear to be turning a blind eye but as soon as there is an incident involving draw bar extensions then they won't any more. |

We have a Hillam extension on our I W trailer and it works really well. It does make the trailer longer for turning in to tight gateways but you soon get used to it. It tows well and our welsh cobs travel well in the trailer. We think it is a very practical solution to the transport problem. |

Does anyone have any views or advice about using a carriage extension on an Ifor Williams trailer to transport a two wheel and a four wheel carriage to events? I just can't seem to get hold of a second hand long trailer. |
