Thanks for your advice Bev and Stephanie. Have taken your advice on board (as well as helpful tips from my step-dad who used to train marathon runners!). Have now devised a training programme taking us up to first HDT at Ashfields in April - poor pony has a lot of work ahead of her! My husband already has a GPS which he loves and we make loads of use of anyway. Think I'm going to have to learn to use it now too!

I have a 14.2 Welsh X Dales. She has a tendency to put on weight. I use a type of interval training which seems to work for me. We managed to get round the club event at Sandringham last year with no time penalties. I start off with longish walks and short trots say 10 to 15 minute walks then a 5 minute trot. I then work up to longer trots with shorter walk intervals. By about April/May I would hope to be doing ma 2 hour session as follows: a 10 minute walk then a 10 minute trot, a 5 minute walk, a 10 minute trot, 5 minute walk, 20 minute trot and the reverse for the second hour. I have recently acquired a Garmin 201 GPS as used by runners and hope to use that to help this year. Good Luck

Sarah Jane

Does is your pony ride and drive? as mine are and I do the majority of fitness work under saddle or on the lunge due to lack of available help etc. If you are riding your pony, build up the work from now on and include some hill work if possible as you are bound to find some at events. Work on the lunge can also be very beneficial as the work is concentrated, but beware your pony must be built up slowly to avoid injury. Some of us have to work harder than others with fitness due to the kind of horse or pony we are training, mine for instance has managed to stay fit despite much input from me because he does everything with enthusiasm!! However I always step up the work before the season to avoid injuries and get the best from my horse. Good luck for the new season and maybe see you at the final????? Cheers Bev Huntington

My husband and his pony are mid-way through their first season of indoor trials and he's loving it. Now he's beginning to turn his thoughts to having a go outdoors in the Spring but I am very worried about our pony's fitness for the marathon section. She can easily do the required 17km but its doing it in the time without being too exhausted for the obstacles at the end that bothers me. On a pleasure drive (our only experience at present) we probably average about 5 to 6 miles per hour - dismal I know!! but we've never really bothered about speed until now!
Does anyone have any tips on how I go about training our pony for the marathon section? Getting the speed and stamina. Any fittening programme suggestions or other advice would be most gratefully received.
