Yes, sure the groom can lean for safety - shouldn't need to very much - but mustn't jump or slide the vehicle.

This is what the rule says:

2.4.14 Grooms and passengers are not allowed to give assistance, including verbal or physical directions; sliding, lifting or moving the vehicle in any way during precision and paces or cones. Contravening this will incur 20 penalties for their competitor for each incident.

Our pony (12.2hh) cannot do 220 metres per minute at a balanced trot. We have to extend round or do a small amount of canter.

Hi - no! Basically a good cones round should be a balanced trot so there fore no need to balance.... Hope this helps..

Could someone please clarify ~ when a cones course is being driven, are backsteppers allowed to lean to keep the vehicle balanced? Not talking about physically moving the vehicle, but leaning to ensure it stays on 4 wheels!
