We all enjoyed Blaircourt Equine vet Patrick Martin's talk on evaluating lameness last night at Ashfields Clubhouse. It was full of useful tips and Patrick explained how he works out a diagnosis - from easy to difficult, using nerve-blocking, walking and trotting on different surfaces, lameness in the foot or leg, front or behind. We saw photos, diagrams and videos. The best (especially for Mike Watts) was a video of an arthroscopy - trimming damaged cartilage in the joint of one of Wilf's horses. Mike's was similarly treated in July and he's trotting up sound now! A memorable evening - thank you, Patrick. "Lameness - an approach to lameness evaluation in the horse" Keeping your horse or pony sound is important, of course, and this talk explains an approach to identifying lameness, its possible causes and some treatments from the vet's perspective. Patrick Martin, partner at Blaircourt Equine Veterinary Clinic, sees dozens of cases of lameness a year and his practice at Woodham Ferrers has purpose-built trot-up, lungeing and riding arenas to help vets assess a horse or pony 's problem. Patrick has a special interest in carriage horses and since 2003 has accompanied the British team to the World Horse Pairs/Teams Championships. Patrick is an enthusiastic speaker and he draws on fascinating case studies and wide-ranging personal experience of treating horses of all shapes and sizes. He knows how to make his subject easy to understand and explains it from first principles including the necessary details about the horse 's anatomy and musculature.
