I have no problem with 'gender salutes', and quite like the ieda of men saluting in a different way to ladies, but may I ask all you gentlemen - if you were to meet the Queen, you wouldn't curtsey would you?

I am no fan of political correctness but this one seems cut and dried. Regardless of the risks of misjudgements of gender their can only be a requirement for - a salute. No doubt most men will continue to salute in male fashion and most ladies in female fashion if only to ensure that no-one does mistake their gender! Of course there may be other more personal reasons into which we should not pry. Rumour has it though that poor Lee was obliged to start using the ladies gesture outdoors when elevating his titfer, because his toupee was prone to take flight in any breeze and frightened his horse; so on health and safety grounds he was thus obliged to offer the most appropriate salute that he safely could. Personally I have a large sized Australian leather hat that fits over my skull cap so can easily stress my manhood fully by doffing in the most correct manner, even indoors. It does however make my head look rather big!

In indoor driving this "tradition" is only a few weeks old. Surely it could not be anything to do with an unnamed official having a hissy fit after receiving criticism over the 2013/14 season test?

Gentlemen whips need not remove their protective hard hats but must put both reins and the whip in left hand and with the right hand touch the peak of hat whilst bowing the head.

Ladies you must put both reins in your left hand, bow your head and with your right hand lift the whip horizontal (length of whip to elbow must be horizontal) to the brim of your hat.

As there is not that much difference, does it really matter? If its the norm to have a different salute for different genders, then whats wrong with sticking with it? Its nice to have some tradition I think.

I Salute you one and all………………………………..

Tits and teeth, or Bit's and Beards... I'm not sure personally, but Sport is for all, without discrimination....
The Indoor trial has opened the doors up to many new drivers and provides a friendly yet competitive arena for the modern discipline of sports carriage driving.

However, in this modern age, where we can be Male, Female, or any combination of the two, and at risk of seeming petty I am somewhat bemused by marks being altered based on a gender-determinant salute...

It is apparently now the "in fashion" !!! That marks are being deducted for an "incorrect salute", incorrect to whom may I ask?
That judges have been told to dock a mark if the men do not salute correctly is surely bordering on sexism (lest we not forget ladies, it goes both ways) and the men are quite right to feel rather picked on.

Now, whilst you clear up the coffee you've spluttered incredulously over your keyboard, please note, this would be completely acceptable in the showing world, where there are well established salutes based on gender, with good (traditionally biased) reasons behind them i.e. the men doff their caps, the ladies would never do so and so raised the whip.

HOWEVER, we, in the modern world, all wear crash hats that are done up in competition

We are no longer playing in the traditional arena, we do not insist on the coachman style of rein handling, or aprons to be worn. Surely the fact that the driver (whatever their gender) acknowledges the judge in safe and acceptable manner, is the important thing here. Whether this is by a slight raising of the whip or a nod of the head (or both if you feel like it!) shouldn't matter, and we certainly shouldn't make it a case of one rule for one (gender), one rule for another!

In any case, should the judge be making such a personal judgment as part of their marking? How do they know if Joe Bloggs isn't really a Josephine underneath all the Ski-gear or a Onesie? (Well that’s another story and possible marks lost for not wearing traditional dress?) And another, what do they do if they can't tell? They can't very well ask?!

"But" you cry, "The judges have a running order, they can tell from the names!" - Maybe, but "Sam" could be either male or female, and anyway doesn't that constitute name judging?! (That isn't on either, in any form!)

Personally I feel the idea of a gender-based salute is archaic, sexist and misrepresentative of the "for all" sport that we all know and love, but if it is to remain can then ALL Judges include this in the final movement mark, right across the country...

And once again I Salute you……………………………and await your comments!
