Hi, Natalie, I have tested four body protectors for driving and reviewed them all and looked into the testing standards too. My recommendation is to go to a reputable tack shop and try on several body protectors, bearing in mind that many manufacturers will make a shorter version than the models used by riders (so we drivers can sit in a seat more comfortably). I find that I hardly notice them when I drive but I only wear one for a competition - not more than about an hour or so. I have a Racesafe 2000, a Rodney Powell, an Airowear and a Zilco Driva. Rodney Powell (no relation!) and Airowear were made to fit me. If you are of a "non-standard" size, you might be better off investing in a made-to-measure model. Do seek advice from the experts before buying one - you might find someone who will let you borrow theirs to try, too. I can recommend Sue Mart and Wendy Palfrey at Bennington and Frances Collings of Jack-in-a-box particularly. p.s. I understand that the "blow-up" protectors should be worn with a body protector underneath - unless their guidelines have changed since I last looked! Do let us know how you get on? |

After my first tip up the other week (at var/www thankfully, my rein buckle broke and I panicked, pulled left and tipped up, getting stuck underneath).... I am considering a body protector but not sure where to start. I did think the air jackets might be a good idea but not if you tip of close to the vehicle?? I am not the smallest lady so anything too bulky would probably not be ideal. The racesafe looks nice and flexible but would it be too low at the back? Any ideas greatly appreciated ? |
