I am interested in having a go at indoor events as I was a regular club competitor and am just coming back in after a little gap (university!). I drive shetlands and have a new shetland tandem coming on...I currently have a two wheeler (no back step) that I have competed in club events with (it meets all the HDT requirements except has no back step/seat behind for groom). I was wondering whether this is suitable to compete with indoor (local level initially). I will be looking for something new once I see how they go so any suggestions of particularly good types of vehicles or any different requirements from HDT events would be gratefully received! I have been thinking about a four wheeler as I sometimes have different grooms of quite different weights and this would make the balance issue much easier
Thanks.

Hi Esther
Your two wheeler is fine providing your don't mind going side by side, personally I am now scared to death of the thought of it! I find a four wheeler the safest and most stable type of vehicle for our sport. If you go to a four wheeler for your shetlands remember to get the lightest possible, but if you intend on going National outdoors it must be of standard weight.
Have fun this season indoors.

I've driven both a two and a four wheeler indoors. I think there are advantages to both. The two wheeler was great fun to drive as its so compact and you don't have to worry about your back wheels (which turn in tighter than you front ones), which particularly helps in the cones!! Having driven the two wheeler for one season i have now gone back to my four wheeler. The reason for this is because now my pony is more experienced (and he has learnt what speed is!) he seems happier in the four wheeler. Personally i don't feel any less safe in a two wheeler, especially indoors and with a groom who knows what they're doing - but its down to personal preference i guess! Its worth noting from a competitve point of view that having a two wheeler doesn't put you at a disadvantage (as proved in the highly competitve open pony class)! Hope you have a good season!

I am finding my 2 wheeler, side by side, quite adequate for the indoor trials, BUT it is a very stable vehicle with quite low centre of gravity AND I have had the benefit of an experienced groom. I also think I would be quicker through the obstacles in a four wheeler as I would be able to turn tighter.(Can't afford to buy one at present - but maybe sometime). Even if you can't be quick enough to be in the prizes, it's still great fun!
