Now we have all (hopefully) kitted ourselves out with body protectors what are the rules should a driver or groom not wear one (left it at var/www or whatever excuse)?
Would that driver be eliminated from the competition and not be allowed to drive?
Or would they still be allowed to drive but their score not count, effectively going H/C?

Body/back protectors will be worn during the whole event as in marathon mode.

Please see changes in rules.

We recommend the use of BP's until 1st January 2016 when they will become a requirement of entry.

Hi Rita

Please could you confirm if back/ body protectors are to be worn for all 3 phases or just the obstacles?
I have received an email from BCD stating that their rules only apply to the marathon phase.
If ICD have adapted this rule to apply to all 3 phases then why can't ICD create their own rule on the standard of body/back protection to be worn?

Many thanks
Sam

I have contacted BCd Office and Chris Smith for answers about back protectors but no real answer will be available for another 4/5 weeks, when the survey will be complete.

Please stay with us on this one - we will let you know when we have decided what the Indoor rule will be on back protectors.

I suggest you contact Chris Smith, who has emailed all BC members asking for opinions. Contact details on BC website, www.britishcarriagedriving.co.uk
There are only three manufacturers whose body protectors are rated for carriage driving (I believe). Back protectors are very popular on the continent - about £15+.

I am guessing they will ask us to have level 3 protection (similar to eventers) with the purple label. This offers the highest protection.
Yesterday my groom and I went and got fitted out with Airowear body protectors, the professional fitter was very helpful and took considerable time and patience to let us try several different makes. We could sit on a saddle and a seat to test the length. When I asked for a 'special price' (as I always do, sometimes I'm lucky, sometimes I'm not) We were allowed a 10% discount which softened the blow.
Roll on the indoor season.....

Good point Rosemary.
This directive has come from BCd and their wording.

From what I can see on the internet, shows that a back protector is simply that, looks like a moulded 'plastic' hard spine protector with straps for fitting, as worn under motorcycle leathers, I should think, not being an expert in these things!
A body protector is what 99% of people are wearing, full back and front body protection. Perhaps extra shoulder and arm protection would not be bad either, but none appear to give protection to the body lower half at all. Some look as if they finish at the waist, does not protect the lower back while others do have lower back protection.

It will be down to the person concerned to do the research and choose the best type they are comfortable in.
Please remember this applies to ANYONE on a carriage at any time while at a INDOOR event although some events may not require them other than on the marathon. So it will be worthwhile everyone checking on the requirements for different Clubs and events but most will follow the BDc directive.

Err so what is the difference between a body and a back protector? And is there a ruling on airjackets?

To all competitors and back-steppers.

Please be aware of the new rule regarding body and back protectors.
This rule will come into force on 1st January 2016 as directed by British Carriage Driving.

Everyone on a carriage will need to wear protection, the BCd are debating if to make it body OR back protectors.

IF you need to buy, it might be wise to go for a body protector and be safe and possibly save money by going the whole hog IF BCd decide on body rather than back protectors that most people have already.
