I think it is still possible to be a true circle - all it means is shifting the whole circle half the width of the vehicle so the horse goes over x at the start of the circle. The '20mtre' would still be determined by the outside wheel all the way around. In a way that is irrelevant as you wouldn't expect the wheel to touch the side of the arena, but be about 25cm away from the edge. Describing the movement as a 20mtre circle is really saying make a circle using the full width of the arena. Jess | ||

Interesting point Adrian, even outdoor circles cannot be circle-shaped per se, when one is judged by the outside wheel on the long side but the position of the horse/pony on the centre line! It's a small anomaly but it is one nonetheless. | ||

This makes sense -- thanks for the clarification -- but it is not consistent with a ruling made by ICD office on 17 August (if I've understood it). In reference to movements 3 + 4, this says circles are measured left and right by the outside wheel but up and down the arena by the pony's nose (or carriage pole). It would be preferable to have circles measured from the outside wheel throughout, otherwise you end up with circles that aren't circles. | ||

There have been a few queries about the half-circle in the last movement of the Precision and Paces test so I have consulted with the ICD authorities and this is the official guide on how movement 10 is to be driven and judged. I trust this will bring sufficient clarification. 10. K Working trot, half 15m circle left Return to centre line at X XG Walk G Halt - Salute Leave arena at working trot The outside wheel(s) of the carriage make a 15m half-circle from K. This means that the outside wheel track should be (literally) 83cms from the short side of the arena and 5m from F. [I doubt that our eagle-eyed precision judges will be measuring down to the last centimetre but the point is that you don't drive to the A side. Similarly, as you drive from the track at K, there will be a small gap between your outside wheel and the arena side so your 15m half-circle might be slightly less, if measured to the last centimetre.] Is this clear? If not, please let me know...  |
