Thank you for your prompt reply. We run an SCDA grassroots event here in April each year (Lunan), and the part of our farm business that I manage is Seahorse Stables, a riding school and livery stables. Our instructor is BHS approved, and we (and she) have comprehensive insurance. I also belong to the BHDTA, BDS and BHS. But whether any of that would cover an unaffiliated driving event is something that I will have to check. The small print really does make a difference!

No, our school certainly isn't big enough for 2 obstacles. It used to be 21 x 54 m, but after we were told that we would have to pay over £8000 a year tax if we rented it to the Pony Club once a year (probable income less than £100!), we were forced to gate off one end and put our hay and straw stores there. Now it's probably only 21 x 40 m and no one uses it except ourselves and our liveries. Haven't measured it, but I do drive both of my horses in it without difficulty (as singles).

Hi Karen.
For an Indoor event you do need an indoor arena minimum of 50x 20m. We have run an indoor qualifier outdoors, in the pouring rain, due to school being double booked and of course show jumping takes priority!!!
You can run an inside-out, on the same guidelines as indoors, this now being the basis for many club events all over the country. P&P followed by cones followed by four flagged obstacles, no problems.
You could run a fun event in a smaller arena but is it big enough for two obstacles, or construct one to be driven twice. The other thing to think about very seriously is insurance, a very touchy subject. If you take peoples money/or allow others to use your school and they have a mishap you will probably be held liable.
Gone are the days when everyone just wanted to have fun, any problems and lets make some money from it, sounds bitter but mainly true.

Hi, all,
Now that autumn is upon us, my thoughts turn to the indoor season. How big should an indoor arena be (beyond the obvious 50x20 dressage size) for a successful event to take place? I would like to host an event, but my indoor school is too small. I do, however, have several outdoor areas nearby that would certainly be suitable. Now, obviously, the word 'indoor' is a big clue that the event should take place, um, indoors, but is there any latitude here? What if the event were not a qualifier? Could I run a fun event in a smaller arena? I drive my 15.3 and 16.2 hh horses regularly in it.
