Janice Parker and Sid King, who normally organise the events at Forest Edge, were sadly absent on Sunday because they recently lost one of their ponies, Welsh cob Ginger. Many people expressed their sympathy. The 27 entries were well looked after by Lindsey and Alan Clarke, Sue and Keith Hargreaves in particular, as well as other faithful helpers. They all made a great job of precise and friendly stewarding, judging and making the event run smoothly. Thanks also to (brave) new paces judge Cilla and, of course, to the ever-cheerful Andy and Dave from the IHDTC for running the event entirely on tea and bacon sandwiches. I competed against Janice and Ginger many times over the years with my cob Sonic indoors and out and they were always formidable rivals to the last. He was a big-hearted handsome pony who could show superb dressage paces and a neat pair of heels as he raced round the obstacles. Formerly owned and competed by Lynne Day and having survived major surgery in the past, he was not the easiest of ponies but he and Janice made a mighty partnership. Ginger became the leader of Alan Clarke's National Champion Pony Tandem in 2006, in front of Ace, and Janice achieved her ambition of competing them as a pair last season. We shall miss him.
