Explanation of dimensions in ICD P&P tests

By a 20m circle, we mean a circle of approximately 20m. Drive the biggest circle that will fit reasonably in the 20m wide arena, allowing a sensible clearance (say 2-10cms) between the outer wheel and the arena edge.

15m circles: we intend a circle of approximately 15m. Where a circle touches the arena quarter line (the imaginary line 5m in from the long sides) we'd expect the centre of the carriage to just touch that quarter line. Where the circle goes to the edge on the diagram, we expect the outer wheel to go near (say 2-10cms) to the edge of the arena.

A 5m deviation - not used this year - similarly means approximately 5m. If it appears to the quarter line or centre line on the diagram, it means the centre of the carriage touches that quarter line. If it goes to edge, it means the outer wheel goes near (say 2-10cms) from the edge.

A note to engineers and literalists: these dimensions are nominal. So when we say 20m circle, the outer wheel makes a circle of diameter 19.8 - 20m. A 15m circle means the outer wheel makes a circle of 15.5m if it goes from edge to the quarter line on the diagram, 16.3m if it is from quarter line to quarter line. If you wish to know the diameter of the circle performed by the horse's nose, or the point midway between the two horses' noses in the case of a pair, subtracting the width of the carriage, 1.25m, from the diameters above should give an accurate enough answer.

UPDATE: We have updated the P&P Test, ICD Test (2020-21) again, changing the 5m wiggle down the centreline into a standard serpentine. Other movements are unchanged. This is version 5 (please check you have the latest!).

We are sorry if this further alteration to the test causes any inconvenience, but it is in response to feedback/improvement requests from members and organisers, to try to give the best possible season.

In addition, some areas have let us know they feel the test is too difficult for some of their turnouts and we now publish a simpler Alternate 2020-21 test. Local organisers may use this for classes at their discretion - please check on your event description on the events page.

The updated tests are now posted on the website https://www.indoordriving.co.uk

as are the updated Covid precautions.

Finally we're sorry for the late changes and I'm proposing a better process to avoid last minute changes to the test next season.

The Precision & Paces test for all drivers at qualifying events is published and has been updated - the diagram for movement 5 has been corrected.

You can download the test with diagrams using the link from our var/www page. Please note that the diagrams are for guidance only and the text always takes precedence.

Check you are using version 3 of the test - see the copyright text which has the document revision number 3 on the end, bottom right.
