For Clarity. Karins vehicle is NOT a scurry vehicle but an old pairs 3 phase vehicle. |

Hello All, at the Wessex area we set the cones at 145cm and don't change them for any of the competitors. Karin Swanson drives her pair in a scurry vehicle measuring itself 138cm yet she has driven two clears at both events she has been to, and we have a heavy horse who regularly competes which is obviously at a disadvantage for both speed and one would think agility, but defiantely not. Apparently it is up to the discretion of the event organisers at what width they set the cones and if they wish to alter them for wider competitors, although it appears this does not happen at the finals which is why we do not alter them - what's the point?

Mike We have competed indoors since 2000 and in six different areas over the years. The cones width has always been 145cm even when the vehicles were 120 wide and we have never experienced the cones being widened for some classes. It does not really matter if the width is 145 or anything else but it should be consistent throughout the qualifiers to give a level playing field. This means stating the width in the new rules. On a personal level an ideal width would be at least 2.5 metres :-) Alan |

Di - yes, found a cones stick, very sorry for delay, and I measured it- 145cm. As someone else pointed out, that gives quite a small clearance at 20cm - less than outdoors - however, it seems about right perhaps because indoor is more level. We increase the width somewhat for horse pairs and pony teams (only), even though their vehicles are still 125cm. Do others? Should the width be fixed or min or max or advisory? |

Di, Sorry, I'll enquire on cones width - won't be seeing a measuring stick for another week. Meantime, if you train cones driving at 145cm wide you'll be fine ...

Di, thanks for the feedback - in 10.5 where we say "Obstacles can have one knockdown per element" by element we mean any set of parts connected together, like a rail and its posts or an L shaped post and rail. The idea is that if you hit any part of the obstacle, just one knockdown should fall off. On the cones width, I'm embarrassed to say we use the measuring stick in the indoor van and - I'll have to measure it, or hope someone knows definitively? ..also, Roger our local IHDT rep increases the width for a particularly large horse pair or pony teams by about 10cm. Outdoor rules specify a width which works out at a clearance of 22cm to 32 cm depending on class. |

Mike, rule 10.5 is not clear to me. What constitutes an element.....how many knockdowns are allowed per obstacle? I earlier asked how far apart the cones were, there was a reply but they were not sure if it is 145cm or not. Di Thorpe |

Indoor Horse Driving Trials UK Rules 2007 - Self contained rules for Indoor HDT click here for rule book This update of the rules includes few changes, but is mainly intended to get all the rules for indoor driving trials together in one document, clearly and self contained, so they can generally be used without needing any other rule books/documents. 2007 changes These are the changes proposed to be implemented this season 2007/8, unless the weight of feedback suggests otherwise: Grooms: can now be as young as 10 for dressage and cones phase, but must still be at least 14 for obstacles. Evidently these are the minimum ages and competitors must use discretion – not all turnouts would be suitable for ten year old grooms and vice versa. Young drivers: The rules recognise that drivers under ten are accepted in some regions subject to strict adherence to the additional rules for young drivers laid down by the BHDTA. These include a competent driver with additional reins for younger drivers. Novice-Open: It is proposed that only novice drivers who finish in the top 50% of their class at the novice national finals are moved up to open class. In the following year if they don’t qualify for the open finals these drivers would be eligible for the intermediate finals. The current scheme, where simply qualifying for the national finals moved drivers up to open, tended to move people up a class "too early". IHDT propose to run an intermediate class, at the national finals only, for those who have qualified recently for the open regional classes but not qualified for the open finals. The rules also recognise practices already operating; for example, some regions run ‘club’ classes for people starting indoor driving, or with a new horse. Simple errors and things that aren’t clear, by all means contact me, Mike Watts (click moderators above) or on this forum. Questions of principle please take up with Dick Carey, the IHDTC office or air on this forum – please be constructive, the idea is to make a good competition as widely available as possible, not to do anyone down!
