The finals are this Sunday!!! I'm so excited!!

Bertie's going better & better. Much faster times when we are practicing through the obsticles!! He's really enjoying himself now!!

One problem. We've only driven the P&P as a whole 5 times, including practicing, but Bertie knows the test better than I do! I went wrong last night, and he pulled such a face & corrected both of us!!

Lesley - have you got a photo to show us???

TAra
was very interested in how your bertie got on as i have also have a bertie who has got heavy horse in him somewhere - he looks exactly like a shire but stands at 14.1 and a halfhh. we are trying to find a driving niche for him and had a go at two indoor events last season but havent been out this time due to lack of transport He loves it!! problem is getting the speed and accuracy combined with his chunkiness against the other more slimline ponies but we will persevere- any tips anyone!

Tara, well done - and only one cone down! It's an addictive sport. Do you have any photos of your horse and/or turnout for Carriage Horse magazine? I'd love to publish one! Thanks - fiona@eacdg.org.uk

Yippee!!!!!

We did it! Actually competed in our first IHDT and had a really fantastic time!

I was so panicky about anything, or everything going wrong that I kept Bertie going so gently the P&P judge said that he was 'obliging & just needs to be asked'.

The cones section was a bit more fun. In Jersey we drive with extendable 'bars' on the back of our vehicles which are 6' wide & 10" off the ground. It means that we don't need to have special vehicles with extending axles like you guys. I hadn't been able to practice as my bars were only finished a few days before, and my boyfriend got the measurements a bit wrong, so my bars were only 8" off the ground, which mean't that we were more at a disadvantage - but Hey! we only hit one cone of a course of 10 so I don't think we did too bad there!!

By the time the obsticles section came around we were so much more relaxed. We had the slowest time through all 4 hazards, but as it was our first time, plus due to Berties Draft Horse breeding & as our wagon was really sinking into the sand in the school (which is extra deep for the BSJA lot), I think we did ourselves proud.

The fun thing is that Ian (my other-half) noted that those running on motorbike type wheels actually stayed on top of the sand and required much less effort to run, so he's currently fast at work making up a 'Bertie Speed Machine' - so watch this space!!

Love

Tara & Bertie

Hi!

Is there anyone else out there as mad as me???

In January I am intending to compete at my local clubs indoor trials competitions with my Breton Draft Horse 'Bertie'.

Bert only stands at about 16hh, but as he weighs in at 900kg I'm not sure how well we will fit around some of the tighter hazards!

I look forward to hearing from anyone else out there.....!

Tara

We have been competing our 16.2 Russian Torric (dual purpose heavy harness horse) at events in both wessex and southern region this season. Despite his size, Max has managed to win at only his second event indoors, proving that size doesnt matter! We always choose the long flowing routes in the obstabcles to avoid lots of changes in speed and direction, but we are all having great fun indoors. Many larger horses compete indoors with great success so please dont be put off by Berts size.

We hold regular practise/training sessions in Hants if that is of any help to you, or you can contact me by email.

Happy driving

The obstacles we've had at East Anglian events have been big and flowing so far this season, so I'd have thought you have a better chance of doing well than last year, when the obstacles were less open. Get your P&P up to scratch and go to the Finals for a great weekend! Good for you for giving it a go.

Unfortunately the Indoor School in Jersey measures 21m x 47m - so it's quite tight at the best of times!

I have booked for a practise there tomorrow, so we shall see!

Bev, have there been any pictures of you in Carriage Driving magazine? I cann't find any pictures, but the description of the toric sounds intrigueing!

Tara
