Duncan, I don't hit people, physically, but I am pretty good at swatting a fly with a driving whip!!!

Never one to hold back. Surely if you are embarassed to put your name to a post then you should not be posting. I'M sure Rita will be the first to hit me when I say hello at keysoe but I stand by everything I said at the time.Ooooch! that hurt

The intention of the Guest logon is really to help people who just use the forum very occasionally and don't want to be bothered with yet another logon and password.

We ask people posting using Guest to give a real name in the post. If people don't want their name to appear against their posts we still ask them to register - even if they register then use a nickname, this may encourage responsible behaviour?

It would be a pity to have to turn off the Guest login as it does make it easier for people, but the policy of this board is that people register, or if they use Guest, give a real name.

Lots of people read the forum. Lots of people have joined the forum and never post: why? I think it's OK to post as Guest, as Alan says, but it's nicer to give some kind of identity, even if it's only a nickname. Read some of the more restricted forums - they are sooo dull!

It's a great shame that some people don't feel comfortable putting their name to a post. What is that saying about all of us?

Yes, there are some sensitive issues and some of us have thin skins and hot tempers - but I think most of us can air our views without ranting or being personal and nasty. (It's easy to offend unintentionally, however.)

My name crops up frequently: it doesn't mean I'm anybody and I don't intend to make out I know anyfink, just that I'm prepared to stick my neck out. I've this unsuppressable urge to be helpful(?) because I remember when I first started driving, not so long ago, it was very hard to find out what one was supposed to do and Other People sometimes have different/better ways of doing things - and I'm a trainer (of change management) so I'm incapable of shutting up if I think something can be done better for more fun!

Perhaps if more people were prepared to say what they really think, and to question - politely - we'd have a better sport at all levels?

I hope "my" competitors feel they can say whatever they like to me - many do! I think open debate and genuinely constructive criticism is healthy.

Ha, sometimes I post as Guest, too...

I think it depends what you want the forum to be. I'm sure alot of drivers regularly visit here but are too intimidated to post. A certain degree of anonimty will get a far more accurate picture of the members opinions without them being worried about judgemental 'big names'.

With Real names it will mean only members with enough status to not be judged by the 'names' or ones who are so angry they don't care.

What do you think?

In a perfect world I would agree with you about no name no post, but this is the internet and it's certainly not perfect.
Not permitting guest posting makes a dull and parochial forum.
I think your use of emotive words like honour, integrity, hiding, distasteful and cowardly is a bit strong and won't do much to convince anonymous guest posters to put their real name on the end.

Can I suggest that people are no longer allowed to sign in as 'guest'and should have to put a valid name to their comments, no name no posting. There are too many people hiding behind anonymity, if they think their comment or gripe is a valid one they should do the honourable thing and put their name to it. It is very distateful and cowardly to hide behind a pseudonym
