Yes, you started correctly going A then B, then make an error of course by going through D (backwards or forwards = EOC).

You can take any route, through any gate, forwards or backwards, to return to C.

Then drive C with red on the right, then D then E with red on the right.

In practice I would try to stay outside the obstacle (as much as possible) to return to C because it's sometimes quite hard for the stewards to see exactly what route you are taking (especially in poor light and at the end of a long day!).

We don't always get time to write down someone's route indoors but one would record every gate driven and the direction it was driven in to do it "properly". I'd do it in this case as...

A B D E C D E

where the underline means it was driven backwards.

If you drove through A backwards after D the second time (quite legally), I'd write the whole course:

A B D E C D A E

You can see that ABCDE were eventually driven in order with one correction.

Hmm, hope this helps!

So what would be the IHDT/BHDTA penalties if you took the gates ABDECDE? (from the text I assume you dont have to go backwards through D after taking it out of turn.)

Just between you and me I'll 'fess up to being a teeny bit geeky. I believe that if you know the rules and what to do if things go wrong, you'll enjoy competing more: it's an awful feeling when you know you've gone wrong and don't know how to put it right! So I hope this note helps you and any others in a similar position.

As you probably know, IHDT rules are based on the BHDTA rules, which you can read in full under Reference, www.horsedrivingtrials.co.uk

I think these are the relevant ones if I've understood your question...(Compulsory Gate means A, B, etc.!):

"946.2.3 Competitors who pass through a Compulsory Gate in the wrong sequence or direction before it becomes “free” and without correcting the error before passing through the Exit Flags will be eliminated.

946.2.4 In order to correct an Error of Course, the Competitor must return to and drive the Compulsory Gate he missed before continuing through the next Compulsory Gate in the correct sequence (for example; a Competitor drives through Compulsory Gates A and B and then goes through D (missing gate C). In order to correct this Error of Course, the Competitor must go back and drive through gate C before going on to gate D etc., all gates are neutralized until he reaches this gate). Each Error corrected shall incur 20 penalties."

So, if you drove A, B then C backwards, you must go to C (by any route, through any gates) and drive through it in the correct direction, then drive D then E, then thro' the finish. You get 20 penalties but you are still in the competition.

Of course you can make more than one EOC if you try hard enough!

We note on the scores something like EOC or EC for Error of Course and CEC for Corrected Error of Course.

It's a great help to the scorer when spectators and other competitors watch the routes people take and say immediately if they think there's been an error or knockdown, too.

Hope this helps?
